RAM (Random Access Memory)
You can never have too much (RAM) memory installed in your PC. Unlike hard drive storage. RAM is what gives your computer its speed. In particular it is the amount of L2 Cache memory on the processor chip itself.

|
To get the best possible performance from a system, all the RAM chips should be capable of running at the same speed. Cheaper memory tends to be slower. If you fit cheaper memory or mix and match your RAM then your system will automatically adjust to match the speed of the slowest memory chip installed. Memory speed is not the same as processor speed.
Most PC's today are sold with about 2Gb of normal DDR2 memory, running at either 667MHz or 800MHz and is acceptable for normal working. Here at Computer Solutions We fit 4Gb's as standard for 32 bit operating systems to facilitate the newer AMD and Intel triple and quad core processors.
Hard Drive
Storage is the amount of files that can be stored on a PC. Older hard drives run at around 5400 RPM newer ones at up to 10,000 RPM, although the higher speed units tend to apply to larger volume hard drives.

Motherboard
Most computer motherboards have a degree of flexibility to which a range of processors can be installed, assuming it has the same type of processor socket. Motherboard flexibility and facilities are allied to the cost. The more expensive the motherboard, the better it will be. Initial purchase of a quality motherboard, followed at a later date of upgrading of the processor can be very cost effective.

Processor Cooling
Increased speed will cause the processor to run hotter than usual so upgrading the fan or processor-cooler would be advisable. Processor coolers come in all shapes, sizes and technologies. Generally speaking the type of cooler you will need will depends on whether you have an AMD or an Intel processor and how fast you want to want to run it !

A Word About Software
Most computers now come 'pre-installed' with either Microsoft Works or with Microsoft Office. Computer Solutions would like to point out that neither MS-Works nor MS-Office have ever been part of the Windows Operating System. They are both entirely separate products, from the same manufacturer, which are bundled with your computer.
If you lose your recovery disks the software cannot be reinstalled. This will mean the purchase of a recovery disk compatible with your computer or the purchase of Office or Works that were originally with your computer.
The Word-Processor supplied with Microsoft Works appears similar to the one in Microsoft Office, they are not the same. Microsoft Office can read Word-Processor files that were created in Microsoft Works. Works is generally considered a cut-down version of Office. The OEM version of MS-Works can be bought for less than £6, when supplied with a custom built computer where as MS-Office is around ten times the price.
Retailers assume you will be using MS-Works and thereby purchase Microsoft Office. Retailers usually give a 90 day trial version of Microsoft Office.
